Dream

Dream

Grace Young DorothyWhen my daughter, Grace, was 4 years-old she dreamed of being Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz." She dressed like Dorothy for Halloween and sang, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." She carried Toto, her pretend dog, around in a basket. It was so cute and fun.

In January of this year, 9-years later, the Middle School where Grace attends announced the school play this spring would be "The Wizard of Oz." Grace was nervous, but she tried out. As her dad, I tried to temper her expectations. I told her that being a 7th grader (and not an 8th grader) it would be difficult to earn a lead part, plus there were a lot of other kids trying out. Yet, undeterred she pursued her dream. She practiced the lines and the songs. She went through three auditions over two weeks. And, then we all waited for the email to tell her the result.

We were at a Super Bowl party with friends from church when the email came through. Grace started jumping up and down and then tears of joy flooded her sweet face. You see, dreams really do come true. She got the role of Dorothy!

This past weekend, Grace performed three shows as "Dorothy." I was there cheering her on. So many incredible family and friends came and supported her as her dream really did come true. She was amazing! And, I was so proud of her.

And, she taught me something in the process.

C.S. Lewis writes, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream."

Never stop dreaming.

When we stop dreaming, we stop living. We serve a God who is big. We serve a God who can, and will, accomplish the dreams He has placed in our hearts. We should never grow comfortable or complacent and stop. We must keep dreaming, growing and living our lives for Him.

What dreams has God-given you?

Take a moment to think about the dreams in you. Maybe it is to write a book or to run a marathon. Maybe it is to have a family or to travel the world. Maybe it is to start your own company or to teach. Maybe it is to lead your workplace to Christ or to be a leader at church or to serve on a church staff. Or, maybe it is to be "Dorothy."

You know the dream. Maybe you have suppressed it because you never thought it would happen. Maybe in your life, you have listened to the doubters and they have deterred you. Maybe you have become distracted by the other things in life and have settled for the less.

But, don't forget about the dream. The fact is - it is God who gave you the dream. He puts desires in your heart and dreams in your mind. And, I believe God has been working in your life ever since He gave you the dream. Just the evidence of you dreaming means God is alive in you. He will accomplish those dreams if we will just trust Him.

God is preparing you for what God is preparing for you.

If you trust Him, God will bring the dream in your life to fruition. God has always been working in your life to prepare you for this dream. Look back and look up. Now, the accomplishment of God-given dreams always comes in His timing and not ours. Just ask Abraham who waited and waited and waited to have a child because God gave Him a dream of being a great nation. Just ask David who waited and waited and waited to be the king even after he was anointed many years earlier. Just ask Joseph when it seemed his "dreams" would never come true.

God will bring His dreams in you to fruition, but He is inviting you to do your part. So, what steps are you taking? After you identify the dream, then you need to start to practice. Learn the lines. Take steps to start seeing those dreams come to life. It isn't easy, but the best things in life (outside of salvation) never are. Yet, this is what makes the accomplishment of dreams even sweeter. When you cross that finish line, when you turn in that manuscript, when you hear your children pray for you, when you see dreams come true, the hard work and time are all worth it.

Don't stop dreaming. God is not finished with you. There is still breath in your lungs for a reason. Ask God to revive a dream He has given you or to give you a new dream.

"For nothing is impossible with God." Luke 1:37

Then, as your dreams come true - here's the fun part, join God in what He is doing in the world - and help make the dreams of others come true. Sponsor an orphan, go on a mission trip, pay for a student to go to Camp, and you will feel the joy God feels as He watches the dreams of His children fulfilled. Make one of your dreams be to help fulfill the dreams of others. In fact, when it comes to dreams, I think this may be the greatest joy of all...

...to sit on the front row and watch someone you love, who has worked so hard, accomplish their dream. You stand up, clap, cheer, throw flowers, and give praise to the One who allows you to be a part of what He is doing. You are so thankful and proud - just like God is for His children.

And, in the process - you dream again.

Graduation

"This is the best graduation I have ever seen - including my own kids," said one of our team members. "I have never experienced anything like it, and I want to come every year." Our Justice & Mercy Graduation celebration in Moldova is absolutely incredible. These are kids who have completed our Transitional Living program and before they enter our Independent Living. To see the joy and to feel the accomplishment is almost indescribable.
